An overview of renting a property

Student Guides The Guild 10th April 2017

Whether this is your first time renting, or you are looking for some advice about renting as a student, we have gathered together some useful information to help you.

This is an overview of the stages you should expect with links to where we have expanded the information that you can follow for more details.

The steps:

1. Prepare your paperwork
2. Find some housemates before you start looking
3. Search for a property
4. Arrange some viewings
5. View the property
6. Make sure you understand all the fees
7. Secure the property, usually by paying a deposit so they take it off the market
8. Read the contract thoroughly
9. Find a guarantor
10. Pay your deposit
11. Move in!

TOP TIP FOR STUDENTS: Remember that your university will probably have someone who can help - look out for an accommodation office or speak to your student union.
