Overview

7 Bedroom Detached House for sale in Rose Walk, Purley

A very well appointed family house located on Rose Walk within the highly regarded Webb Estate. The Estate is named after William Webb a local estate agent who bought an area of farmland in 1888 with the vision of creating an exclusive residential area. Based on the concept of co-operation between architect and gardener it has retained its atmosphere of tranquillity and seclusion for over 90 years. Webb's unique approach to development, which gives the estate its character, was in part built around the imaginative use of plants and shrubs, with each road having a different character. Webb laid out a garden landscape and then introduced 225 properties, all different and carefully sited.

The Estate was to be the work of a lifetime and it took Webb more than 30 years to perfect his vision, which now encompasses eleven roads. Rose Walk was laid out in 1907, and the first plots were offered for sale in 1911. It is one of the more famous roads on the estate, and some of its characteristics are remarkable. Forty feet wide, Rose Walk winds from east to west for half a mile and boasts twenty five foot wide flower beds in which Webb planted six thousand roses of some four hundred varieties. Queen Mary used to visit the road each year to admire the roses, as did many others. Rose Walk is gated at each end and single storey lodges were erected for gatekeepers, at the east end in Surrey style and at the west in Sussex style. The gates are of wrought iron with volluted tops and hang from red brick pillars.

St Malo is a handsome red brick house with rendered upper parts and leaded windows which enjoys a wide south backing plot with excellent seclusion at the rear. Extensively modernised in recent years but maintaining the best of the original, the house offers a perfect blend of character with the modern fittings and a layout well suited to the way we live today. From the central tiled hall way there are doors to the main living rooms, with a drawing room / study on the right with garden access. The sitting / cinema room with drop down screen, and wood burning stove is behind this overlooking the garden with a deep bay with patio doors and side access to the covered area created by the ‘bridge’ linking the exceptionally large garage to the house.

To the left there are doors into the dining room which opens via a pair of part frosted glass doors to the family area and kitchen. To the side of the stairs a short corridor serves the study and leads through to the kitchen. The study is created behind a partially frosted glass wall and this also has a garden door, there is an adjacent cloakroom with mirror mosaic walls and a starlight led ceiling.

The kitchen breakfast room is a stunning feature of the house and provides a fantastic family hub of cooking and leisure areas, all overlooking and having access to the rear terrace and wider gardens. The kitchen has a very large central shaped island with drawers and storage cupboards beneath and incorporating a Wolf professional range with gas burners, wine fridge and a food prep sink with spray tap. There is an additional 4 oven gas Aga and two Miele conventional ovens. There are individually coloured full height larder cupboards as well as wall cabinets and further worktops.

Off the kitchen is a very large adjacent laundry / utility room which houses all the appropriate appliances...
