Lavenham is often described as one of England's finest preserved medieval villages. With its fortunes arising from the wool trade in the 15th and 16th Centuries, the village has a magnificent parish church and a wonderful selection of ancient houses and cottages dating from Tudor timber buildings through the Georgian period to the Victorian era. Today the village is very vibrant with a most active community and useful range of shops including a butcher, pharmacy, bakery, traditional grocer's store and two modern co-ops. There are also a number of interesting shops and galleries and several fine public houses and restaurants. There is a primary school and a modern doctor's surgery. Shilling Street is tucked just off the Market Place a little away from the hustle and bustle of the centre of the village, and is regarded locally as the best spot in Lavenham. It contains some of Lavenham's finest medieval timbered houses and those on this side of the road enjoy the advantage of wonderful views behind over open countryside.

3 Shilling Street is Listed Grade II as being of architectural and historical importance and is built on a massive oak timber frame with the original jettied front elevation. Originally a typical Suffolk rectangular hall house, the mighty structure can still be seen upstairs where both bedrooms and the landing are vaulted right up to the ridge with exposed rafters, timbers, braces and a fine king post. There are a wealth of other architectural features including broad oak and elm floorboards, nice old doors and stripped pine casement windows, which replace the medieval mullions. The house has been sensitively and carefully restored to a high standard and is presented beautifully throughout.

In times past the house was divided into two cottages although the previous owners purchased it as a single dwelling and re-divided it into two cottages with a connecting door downstairs which have been operated by the current owners as successful holiday lets. Each part has its own front and back doors, kitchen and en suite bathroom. The wide terrace at the rear is divided in half but the lovely main garden still remains as one. What is now the sitting room of the upper cottage used to be a large kitchen easily re-instated.
