Maen Hir is believed to date from the latter half of the 19th century and is a fine example of Victorian architecture. It has a particularly attractive front façade, including a principle gable and high chimney stacks. The property is constructed predominantly of rubble stone with some brick to its rear elevate, beneath a slate roof which has been overhauled in recent years. Indeed, during the present owners’ tenure since 2021 the house has been subject to certain alterations and improvements, including re-placement of many parts of the roof slates, double gazed bespoke windows, and the external render has been removed.
Accordingly, whilst a scheme of works has started, certain items require further completion to fully renovate the building, notably new render and some replastering internally along with redecoration. The kitchen and bathroom fitments were upgraded by previous owners, and were done to a high standard at the time, but there is scope to update fitments as required, notably the kitchen area if one were to extend that part of the building - planning permission for a single storey side extension to the kitchen was granted in 2021, which would make for a wonderful open plan kitchen and everyday living space.
Maen Hir provides spacious and superbly proportioned accommodation arranged over two floors ideally suited to family living or perhaps a party wishing to downsize from a larger country house who wishes to retain a rural environment and modest acreage. In addition is a wine cellar which also accommodates the oil fired boiler (not presently in use). The house has retained plenty of period character with high ceilings, open fireplaces and the newly fitted sash windows, and outside, the outbuildings were also renovated 15 years or so ago as was the walled garden which, along with the woodland and field in front of the house, provide for a wonderful, mature setting with magnificent views towards Snowdonia.
From the front door and vestibule a glazed door opens into the entrance hall which is L-shaped and has a turned staircase leading to the first floor. The three reception rooms are all accessed off the hall and have open aspect across the grounds, notably the drawing and dining rooms which span the full width of the front of the house and enjoy the view towards Snowdonia. Both rooms have open fireplaces and the sitting room has a woodburner. To the rear is the kitchen which has a range of hand painted wall and floor units incorporating cupboards and drawers beneath polished granite work surfaces, a Falcon cooker with double oven, grill and 5 ring gas hob beneath extractor, twin Belfast style sink with drainer, Miele dishwasher, integrated fridge and wine rack. There is a door to outside and plenty of space for a table and chairs.
At first floor level the accommodation is as comprehensive with 4 double bedrooms, one of which has a large dressing room off or 5th bedroom, and 3 bath/shower rooms, one of which is en-suite to the master bedroom. The W.C in the family bathroom is not functional.

Location

Maen Hir occupies a private and slightly elevated position

accessed via a long drive and surrounded by mature gardens

and grounds with a spectacular south easterly outlook across

its own land and the surrounding countryside towards the

mountains. It is situated in a particularly unspoilt part of the

island, yet is within a few miles of the A55 Expressway for

travel across North Wales to Cheshire and linking with the

national motorway network. For travel further afield there is a

direct rail service from Bangor to London Euston, stopping at

Chester and international airports in Liverpool and Manchester

both of which are within easy reach.

Location

On the recreational front the island is surrounded by wonderful coastline with numerous beaches many of which are only a short distance from Maen Hir, including Aberffraw, Rhosneigr and Newborough from which there is a lovely walk either along the beach or through the forest to Llanddwyn Island which becomes separated from the mainland at high water. Indeed the coastal path runs around the whole of the island which enables one to fully appreciate the different coastal features and outlooks, and there is also wonderful walking in the nearby Snowdonia Range.

Location

Other activities and attractions include, the Anglesey Sea Zoo, Halen Mon and Foel Farm Park all at Foel, golf courses at Rhosneigr, Holyhead and Bull Bay, motor racing at Ty Croes riding stables at Tal y Foel on the banks of the Menai Strait, and on the mainland there is Zipworld at Llanberis. There are also National Trust properties at Plas Newydd on Anglesey and Penrhyn Castle near Bangor.

A comprehensive range of services is available in Llangefni, Menai Bridge and Bangor including a choice of supermarkets and there are several good pubs/restaurants nearby including, Dylans and The Sosban at Menai Bridge, The Bull in Beaumaris and The White Eagle in Rhoscolyn.

Outside

The property is approached via a long tarmacadamed drive to a wide gravel parking area beneath the north west front. To the south is a field which is down to grass and surrounded by a stone wall and mature hedgerows, with independent gated access both to the drive and onto the road.

To the rear of the house are the outbuildings which comprise a stone and slated potting shed (16’8” x 10’11”), a timber and slate building incorporating double garage (18’ x 15’6”) which is served with light and power and has two up and over doors, three loose boxes and a tack room and a further stone building which has been converted to a utility with sink and plumbing for washing machine, and separate W.C, attached to which is a greenhouse.

The walled garden is to the south of the house and incorporates a wide lawn surrounded by deep borders supporting a wonderful variety of flowering trees and shrubs including roses, peonies, poppies, camellias, azaleas and ferns. At one end is a flagged terrace with seating area. A path extends around the walled garden and through woodland which also has access into the field and back to the stabling.
