The main drive features a wide avenue of trees which were laid out for the inaugural opening in 1899 and within easy access is the children's play area, bowling greens, tennis courts and woodland walk. The park was once part of Leicester Forest (mentions in the Doomsday book in 1089) and was an important games reserve where the Earl's of Leicester and their descents hunted.
