THE PROPERTY
Built shortly after 1660, this substantial three-storey gabled house forms one of a distinguished pair, with a further two properties situated opposite. Notably, these were the first brick houses constructed within the Cathedral Close, with the bricks fired locally within The Close itself.

The property retains an exceptional array of period features, including original wainscoting in the dining hall and exposed timbers on the attic floor, reflecting its rich architectural heritage. In recent years, the house has been thoughtfully and sympathetically refurbished to a high contemporary standard, incorporating redecoration throughout, new carpeting, and the installation of a bespoke handmade kitchen with integrated appliances.

The ground floor offers generous and versatile accommodation, ideally suited to both formal entertaining and everyday living. An elegant dining hall sits at the heart of the house, with a drawing room to the front and a sitting room to the rear. Further accommodation includes the bespoke kitchen, utility/boot room, cloakroom, and a cellar.

The first floor provides a principal bedroom with ensuite shower room, two further double bedrooms, and a spacious family bathroom enjoying views of the Cathedral. On the second floor are three additional double bedrooms and a further bathroom.

OUTSIDE
To the rear of the property, extending across the full width of the house, is a generous walled garden with side access and fine views of the Cathedral. A garage and parking at the front of the property is also available.

LOCATION

The Close is set behind the Cathedral and is a secluded and tranquil location, yet only 5 minutes' walk from the High Street, Winchester College and home to The Pilgrims' School. The gated entrance to the close is locked at night with residents having their own keys for access.

A very brief history of the location:

Dome Alley is located on an historical site which most likely served as gardens for St Swithun’s Priory from the 10th century right up until the Reformation. After the Reformation, The Close took on a more residential nature and the area now occupied by Dome Alley, provided gardens for several canons’ residences known as the “Great Garden” until the mid-17th century.

During the Civil War, Winchester was seized by Parliamentarian forces, and many early medieval and early modern buildings were destroyed. In 1660 the Cathedral and Close were passed back to the Dean and Chapter, and a major campaign of re-building began; and Dome Alley was born.

These buildings now offer a modern-day opportunity to reside in a piece of history.
