History - Home Farm, located on Barton Road in Barton, Winscombe, boasts a rich history dating back to the 15th century. Originally constructed around 1450 as a single-storey house, it likely featured an attached barn. In the late 1400s, the house was extended toward the road, and approximately 250 years ago, the roof was raised to add a second floor. The adjacent Bakehouse cottage, though its original construction date is uncertain, was rebuilt around 230 years ago on its original site. Both Home Farm and the Bakehouse are now Grade II listed buildings.
The presence of several outbuildings where the current Granary and Scrumpy cottages stand. In the early 1900s, the Bakehouse served as the kitchen, accompanied by a hay store (likely the present-day Hayloft cottage) and a cider barn (probably where Scrumpy Cottage is now located).
Over the centuries, Home Farm primarily operated as a working farm. However, much of its land was sold in the mid-20th century, leading to a period of disuse. Restoration efforts commenced in the 1980s, culminating in the completion of the fifth cottage, Fry's Barn, in 2003. The original stones from a derelict barn were repurposed to construct the main retaining walls of the central gardens.
